Why Can't I Stay Erect Without Constant Stimulation?

Since the dawn of time men have been touching their junk. If you need evidence, then check out this classic scene from Mel Brooks History of the World (which for the record is one of the most underrated comedies of all-time). Are you surprised? I think not.

But what if your constant need to touch your Johnson is an actual necessity? What if the only way you can stay erect is with constant stimulation. Is something wrong? Worry no longer, we are here to help.

Between Dr. Google, Reddit and your favorite porn site, there’s a lot of misinformation about your man-meat on the internet. That’s why VirtuCare is committed to providing accurate “dickformation” (dick information)  from the expert. A board-certified urologist.

Let’s review some of the potential reasons why you can’t stay erect without constant stimulation.

Performance Anxiety

A man’s most important sex organ is his brain (I’ll allow our female readers to laugh for a moment). Although it’s debatable, it is speculated that men think about sex every 7 seconds. In some cases, “overthinking” can work against you in the bedroom.

Performance anxiety is a real thing, and most men have experienced this at least once in their life. Whether it was the very first time, the first time after a break-up, or the first time with a smokin’ hot partner, you got in your head too much (not that head), and you couldn’t stay erect.

Anxiety causes stress and stress causes release of stress hormones, epinephrine and cortisol. These hormones impede blood flow to your weiner. As long as there’s no blood flow issues, the weiner gets firm, but without constant stimulation, the blood will flow out.

The first step in combating performance anxiety in the bedroom, is to have a talk with that voice inside your head (again, not that head). Positive self-talk makes a big difference in the boardroom, the basketball court and the bedroom. On the flip side, starting to worry about your ability to stay erect will cause the exact situation you’re trying to avoid.

Your next conversation should be with your partner. Assuming you’re in a loving relationship and this isn’t a first time Tinder date, he/she will love your vulnerability. Discuss your anxiety so your partner can be supportive. If you find your partner is judgmental, then maybe it’s time to consider a different partner.

Lastly, maybe it’s time to visit with an expert. Board-certified urologists are available for private video chats from the comfort of your home. Rather than just mail order the “little blue pill”, they’ll make certain nothing else is going on. And if you need the “little blue pill”, then they can send a prescription to your favorite local or mail order pharmacy.

Tip #1: Can’t stay erect without constant stimulation? Performance anxiety could be keeping you down.

Low Testosterone

Another reason that our brain is so important in the bedroom involves the sex hormone testosterone. The male brain sends signals to the testicles to produce testosterone. Testosterone plays a vital role in a man’s libido and erections.

If you’re having trouble staying erect without constant stimulation, then it’s possible you have a sub-optimal testosterone level. Notice I didn’t say abnormal. The range of a “normal” testosterone level on most lab tests is so wide, that men with pretty low levels often get mislabeled as “normal”.

As a result, in my humble opinion, low testosterone is one of the most poorly managed medical conditions by our colleagues. It’s important to find a physician, ideally a board-certified urologist who specializes in hormone optimization, to receive accurate information and get the help you deserve. A video chat with a VirtuCare expert is a great place to start.

When your testosterone levels are optimal, both of your heads are primed for peak performance in the bedroom. You’ll have no problem staying erect with minimal stimulation.

Tip #2: Can’t stay erect without constant stimulation? Maybe your testosterone levels need a little boosting.

Too Much Porn

Let’s be honest, porn is not great. Separate from the ethical and moral discussions, porn causes unrealistic expectations in the bedroom. Too much porn can also cause some serious performance issues as well.

It’s possible that porn is the reason you have difficulty staying erect without constant stimulation. How does this occur? Let’s travel down this slippery slope.

When you’re going through puberty, if the wind blows you may get an erection. Spontaneous erections are the norm. As time passes, maybe it takes making out with that special someone to cause your man to stand at attention. Then you discover online porn. Welcome to sensory overload.

The more porn you watch, the more your mind and body become desensitized to sexual stimuli. If you’re now accustomed to watching 45 minutes of jackhammering threesomes to stay erect, then what’s the likelihood of staying erect during “normal” sexual activity? Very low. And that’s why your erection goes “bye-bye.”

As everything else in life, when you need to learn the very essence of an issue, we turn to Matt Stone and Trey Parker of South Park. There’s an episode where Stan’s dad Randy can’t climax because the entire internet has gone down (GASP) and he’s addicted to online porn. I’ll let you Google that one yourself (WARNING:  like many South Park episodes, this is not for the sensitive or conservative folks in the room. But then again if you’re reading this blog post, that’s probably not you).

Tip #3: Can’t stay erect without constant stimulation? Cut out the porn.

Venous Leak

Now onto more serious medical issues. It’s certainly possible the reason you can’t stay erect without constant stimulation is a leak in the plumbing system. Blood flows in, but it’s flowing out faster than you can keep up.

During a normal erection, sexual stimulation causes an increase of blood flow via arteries into the penis. In order to stay rigid, the outflow veins must close shut otherwise blood will leak out. If you have venous leak then you may require constant stimulation to stay erect.

For a deeper dive into this, check out our blog post on venous leak.

Tip #4: Can’t stay erect without constant stimulation? Maybe you have leaky veins.

Decreased Sensation

Our final major cause of why you need constant stimulation is a decreased sensitivity of your genitalia. If things don’t feel as good as they used to down there, then it’s difficult to maintain an erection. What causes a decreased sensation of the penis?

Diabetes, age, pelvic nerve injury and even bike riding can lead to numbness or decreased sensation of the penis. You can also add some of our aforementioned culprits like anxiety and low testosterone to common causes of decreased sensation down there.

The cause will obviously dictate the treatment. Improving blood sugars, optimizing testosterone levels and changing your bike seat can improve sensation.

There’s data to support the use of shockwave therapy, and I’ve had success in my private practice in Nashville, improving sensation of the penis. Shockwave therapy may reignite the nerve endings of the genitalia so sexual stimulation feels better and you can maintain an erection without constant attention.

Tip #5: Can’t stay erect without constant stimulation? Take steps to improve the sensitivity of your Johnson.
